At Our Lady Queen of Angels, we take great pride in being a Catholic school and believe deeply it is our responsibility to establish strong values in our students whether or not they are Catholic. We do this through religion instruction and faith-driven traditions that help us come together in faith as a community. Led by our Director of Religion Steve Kulian, known simply as Mr. K, we take our students’ character development just as seriously as their academics in order to produce graduates who are truly Children of God.
By understanding their faith, our students are able to put their beliefs into action in their everyday lives.
Each day, our school community comes together in morning prayer to start the day. We pray as a school community and then go over our day. Often we come together and sing songs about our faith together as a school, helping everyone see faith as a form of celebration central to our daily lives.
We grow in faith and as a community by routinely attending Mass together. In partnership with our neighbors in the convent next door, the Sisters of the Franciscan Renewal, all students attend monthly Masses with parents welcome to attend as well.
Our Upper School students also grow in their faith formation by serving in a variety of roles in the Mass, such as altar servers and lectors. These are also joyous celebrations through song and culminate in our 8th Grade Ring Mass and May Crowning.
Reflection and introspection are key elements of a strong spiritual life and we help these strengths grow within our students through monthly adoration. Led by the Sisters of the Franciscan Renewal, these adorations consist of prayer, reflection, and song. This helps keep prayer as part of our students’ everyday lives as well as giving a moment of peace in our busy lives.
We also prepare our students for their sacraments within the school day. In partnerships with families who opt in to this opportunity, we help our children receive their First Communion and Confirmation, with ceremonies at St. Cecilia’s Parish. Also for children interested in joining the Catholic Church, we organize an annual Sacrament of Baptism to provide an opportunity for all our families to join in the Catholic faith.
Our students bring their faith to life through performances of holidays. Through collaboration with the Sisters, our students act out both the Nativity of Christ and the Stations of the Cross for the entire school community. This allows everyone in the school to learn about the life of Christ in a fun and engaging way!
We also believe in the importance of service as a way to live our faith. As a school, we organize regular drives to help our community. Highlights include a Thanksgiving soup and socks drive, a Christmas Toy and Coat drive, a Lenten food drive, and a bake sale to benefit St. Jude’s. Many of these efforts support the Ministry of the Sisters of the Franciscan Renewal, who run a food pantry in the Convent next to the school.
